Grief and
loss can take anyone by complete surprise. Its perfectly normal to at one
second be overcome with sadness and then afterwards you may be laughing through
tears for no apparent reason. It goes without saying that grief can completely
take you by storm. You may have a feeling of overwhelming sorrow but
simultaneously feel the warmth and glow of cherishing the memories you shared
with a loved one. Grief is completely unpredictable and varies for all who goes
through it.
With this in
mind, in this blog, we will go through a few of the various ways that you can
support yourself or someone you know who is going through grief at the moment,
helping them to find solace in the many resources out there such as books and
podcasts. Read on to discover more.
Dying to know (2010) by Andrew Anastasios
Dying to
know was published after lots of conversations with doctors, people with a
terminal illness, the funeral industry, religious leaders, and those who’d lost
a friend or family member. It gives illustrated really helpful ideas and advice
which will hopefully offer a sense of clarity or calm to those suffering from
grief.
Bereavement: Studies of grief in adult life by
Collin Murray Parkes
This book
was written for professional individuals as well as people who’ve recently lost
a loved one or family member. It recognises that there is no single, correct
way to grieve and this includes plenty of first-hand accounts of bereaved
people’s experiences of grieving.
This show
created by Jordon Ferber and is a platform to talk about peoples feelings about
loss, and to give voice to those who have had similar experiences. Surprisingly
it features lots of mostly comedians and other performers talking about how
they cope, and how they find ways to express their feelings via performance.
Coming Back
is a podcast for anyone coping with death, divorce, diagnosis, or another
heart-shattering loss. It’s a hybrid of mindfulness techniques, practical
knowledge as well as advice, and in-depth interviews with incredible guests and
hosted by Shelby Forsythia, the creator of the podcast.
