The loss of a loved one is never easy and many people find the thought of attending a funeral nerve wracking. You might feel unprepared, both practically and emotionally, but there are some things you can do to help make the experience less daunting.
If you have a funeral coming up and feel nervous about how to cope on the day, see below for our tips to help you prepare to attend a funeral.
There’s no escaping the fact that funerals are a difficult and emotional experience. An important part of mental preparation is accepting that you will be feeling vulnerable and emotional; be kind to yourself and allow space for those difficult feelings. It can also help to reach out to friends and family if you need support.
What should I wear?
It’s a good idea to plan what to wear in advance; many people find it helps them feel in control and there’ll be no last minute rush on the day. Black or dark colours (like navy or grey) are still the standard, unless the deceased specifically asked people to wear bright colours. Men should wear smart suit trousers and a shirt (and jacket if you have one), with smart black shoes. Women can wear a knee length dress or skirt, or trousers with a formal blouse or tailored, dark coloured top.
It’s important to feel comfortable but still look smart, so avoid trainers, too-high heels or anything too tight or short.
Practice your role
Many people choose to give a reading at a funeral, or say a few words about the deceased. If you’ve chosen to give a reading, it’s likely that you’ll be feeling even more nervous. Practice your reading or poem beforehand, either in front of a mirror or with a close friend or family member. Practising will help you feel more prepared on the day, but don’t worry if you get emotional or need to take a break, people will understand that it’s a difficult time.
