Selected Educational Trust Announces Four Second-Career Scholarships to be Awarded in June

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL — May 2, 2023 — The Selected Educational Trust is pleased to announce the opening of the 2023 Spring Cycle Second-Career Scholarship Program, sponsored by Gunderson Funeral Home, Madison, WI, and two additional memorial scholarships in honor of Mark L. Justen and Michael R. St. Pierre.  Applications are now being accepted for these scholarships, which will total $5,500 in awards, to be awarded this June.

“We are so deeply grateful to Gunderson Funeral Home for their generous support of this program, and so deeply humbled to be able to offer these memorial scholarships,” said Stefanie Favia, Senior Director Development with the Selected Educational Trust. “The Trust has been privileged to have awarded 53 second-career scholarships totaling more than $75,000 to Mortuary Science students who have chosen to enter this time-honored profession as a second career! Without the support of our generous donors and sponsors, these scholarships would not be possible.”

The Second-Career Scholarship Program is designed exclusively for individuals who aspire to work as a funeral director as a second-career. Scholarships are awarded in June and December of each year. The application deadline for the spring cycle is May 31. For eligibility requirements and to apply for a scholarship, visit www.selectedtrust.org/second-career-scholarship.

According to Favia, “Many students entering this profession as a second-career are often mature adults with families and careers. But their personal goals include pursuing a career that is more fulfilling and satisfying than what they are currently doing. Scholarship funds are often not available to these second-career students. The Trust created this scholarship program specifically for individuals that are making a change in their career and, as such, will be change-makers in this profession.”
